Hilarion: Not an easy thing really because every person’s experience is different. There are even those that would say that meditation is selfish because all it’s doing is raising your consciousness without helping anyone else. Thus, you could almost say that the rule that begins to emerge when you are seeking some rule or understanding you are not going to find it. If you're looking for something that is universal about all aspects of meditation you are not going to uncover it.
At the same time, it has been shown over and over that achieving various states of consciousness at times what is sometimes called “meditation,” occurs or an observation or a shift in brain wave patterns is observed or that which gives greater insight or understanding or simply a sense of emptiness tends to be beneficial.
So, every person would therefore be encouraged to find out two things about meditation. One would be the obvious, the meditative technique that works best for you. You would experiment with this and try many of them. There are visualizations, there are chants, there are questions to be asked.There is simply focusing on the breath and nothing else; the techniques go on and on. There are techniques that involve movement. There are those that involve the lack of movement and being as still as possible. Again, so many possibilities to explore.
But, the second thing is to note the benefits for you personally. When you find a meditation that you can stay with for a while and give it some time. You will usually notice that for most people, six months is where you usually need to be for any significant change in your life to manifest itself. Then you notice, perhaps you find that you are calmer than before, perhaps you are noting that the aspects of drama that drew you into a place of struggle or tension or anxiety; they no longer do so.
Perhaps, you have noticed that your breathing is deeper and as a result you have more physical health benefits for oxygenation to naturally occur. Whatever it is, you are then at a place where you can draw a conclusion personally about meditation. You may also find, oddly enough around that six month time, that the guides and helpers fully aware of the progress you have made with this are now going to assist by taking it to the next step in which someone will cross your path and oftentimes, it may seem a coincidence, who needs to learn that particular meditation technique. Then you can say honestly and clearly, “it has worked for me and perhaps I can share it with you.”
For some people it will not be the meditation technique but the person crossing your path is recognizing for themselves that following that same path of finding the mediation technique that worked best for them is where they must start even though it is a different technique than yours. The point of this is simply that you then have another anchoring of this for yourself.
Still though, you may find that even though it has brought you benefit. Even though it has enabled you to achieve a different state of consciousness it has not contributed in a direct way at this moment in time. You may find years later, a situation in which being in a meditative state and being calmer is a tremendous benefit to you. Then, you will bring it up again and be able to go to that place.
But, we would suggest that the way things are going these days, having a reliable method that works for you to achieve this higher state of consciousness, this place of meditation will be very useful to you right now, right here and in ways in the future as various things happen on the planet that seem so full of movement, anxiety, kerfuffle. All of those things that draw you to this or that.
Again, where meditation can prove itself so helpful for centering, for focusing, or simply being. Should it be that you take it to an even higher level? A place in which a greater level of consciousness is available to you and has ever been perceived in any of your lifetimes before? Yes. This does seem highly likely that this will be presented to you in the next few years in various ways to various people so, be ready for this. This is a possibility to be imagined and open to. What is odd about it, is that in point of fact it has always been there. That small still voice that you uncover in meditation that has always been there and ready to assist you in raising your consciousness to a level that has not been available before.
